Before you open an account and buy your first cryptocurrency, you need to think long and hard why you need it in the first place. If you’re here to trade, then just leave it on the exchange (or leave just enough so you can trade at volumes you’re interested in).
But it’s a bit more complicated than that, and there’s some serious notes of precaution to be aware of with a wallet. Cryptocurrency won’t just magically appear in your wallet out of thin air. You’ve gotta buy it, first. There are several ways to do that, but the easiest is to exchange a fiat currency—dollars, euros, pounds, etc—for some cryptocurrency. And the easiest place to do that is at an exchange.
Bitstamp are big in Europe and, since 2011, have moved from Slovenia, and the United Kingdom in search of sound regulatory environments. Good volumes are available for larger trades. Well received by people using SEPA and credit cards. Both euro and US dollar deposits are accepted. I like Bitstamp because they really focus on being a pure bitcoin-only exchange (update: since 2017 Bitstamp have started adding popular cryptocoins). Please read my Bitstamp critique for analysis of factors such as security, fees, and the history.
Hi there, I assume from your mentions of Walmart and Chase that you’re an American citizen. I have no idea why your payment method of choice, i.e., credit / debit cards, is failing. If you’re set on using this method (it is more expensive than most other methods but usually more convenient, although this certainly doesn’t seem to be the case for you), then I’d suggest you try try CoinMama.com. The quickest easiest method will likely prove to be a cash purchase. For full details, check out my guide on buying Bitcoin with cash (briefly stated, your options are… Read more »
Yobit, a Russian-founded company first introduced on the BitcoinTalk forum in 2015. Widely criticised in online forums and not too much information to be found about them. Given the controversy surrounded we felt it only fair to look a little bit deeper at the exchange and see if they are being harshly judged. Read the review here, in short, not awful but recommend staying away!
It’s not unsurprising you are having issues with Coinbase, as you say their customer service is non-existent. I don’t see why you cannot open an account because you have moved to New Mexico. I know the New Mexico regulation and Licensing Department recently put out a press release warning people about cryptocurrencies but haven’t banned it as far as I’m aware. Kraken should give you access in the US, as well as Poloniex.
Summary: 247Exchange is a veteran player in the Bitcoin ecosystem which allows you to buy Bitcoins with a credit card in a simple and secure manner. Unfortunately their buying process still has a few glitches and the verification process can take quite some time. I recently reviewed the service hands on, you can read about it here.
In my opinion what sets Binance apart from all the other crypo trading sites is that users can choose between an advanced trading interface or a simplified beginner-friendly one. Such a feature has proved immensely successful, as there are currently over 15 million monthly visits from pro-traders and newbies alike.
Below is a table that summarizes the best places to buy bitcoin. You’ll find sites ranked by: available payment methods, fees, ease-of-use, and reputation. The “reputation” column represents the overall user feedback received in forums. Some sites have multiple methods to deposit money, while others focus on one. The fee column represents commission levels on each exchange.
The cryptocurrency markets have matured in recent years, but there’s still a lot that can go wrong. There are scammers out there, aiming to separate you from your money. Software errors could theoretically wipe out your store of bitcoin. And there’s always the possibility of user error (i.e. you screwing up) that can send your cryptocurrency out into the abyss.
All cryptocurrencies are extremely volatile, and you should be prepared to lose a large percentage of value in a flash. Bitcoin fluctuated wildly in the last few weeks of 2017, with its price rocketing up from $10,240 to $19,994 in early December before dropping by a quarter shortly afterwards. In January it completely crashed to around $10,000 before dipping to less than $9,000 in February.
When it comes to finding the best bitcoin exchange things are not all that easy. Why is this so? Simply because many of the best sites to buy bitcoin are rather recently online. This means that they have had little to get the word out about their services and products. Most people coming to this page will be asking how to buy bitcoin online through a secure means. Well, here is a good starting point. Let’s see how.
Purchasing with a debit/credit card is one of the easiesy ways to buy bitcoins. Also one of the fastest! Since most people understand how to shop online using credit and debit cards, it may be easier for less technical buyers to use credit cards to purchase bitcoins.
Most cryptocurrencies have a pre-determined maximum supply. When that maximum is reached, typically through mining efforts, no new tokens will be produced. (See also: Only 20 Percent Of Total Bitcoins Remain To Be Mined.)
The are two ways you can buy Bitcoins from Coinbase. One is through the Coinbase wallet and the other is through the Coinbase exchange. When you buy Bitcoins through the Coinbase wallet you are basically buying the Bitcoins from Coinbase itself, whereas when you use the exchange you are participating in a trading with other users of the exchange.
Trading fees: Low trading fees are important for the growth of any exchange. In this regard, Binance is very competitive and only charges 0.1% fee for each trade. Moreover, it should be noted that you can get a discount of 50% if you use their token BNB for trading. The discount is huge and it brings down the overall trading fees to just 0.05% which is one of the lowest in the exchange ecosystem.
I’m actually quite impressed that Livecoin has received plenty of good reviews and a low amount of complaints (compared to other leading exchanges). The user interface is built for beginners, and unlike Kraken, you will find it easy to deposit, trade, and withdraw. While most of the exchanges listed on this page focus on bitcoin, Livecoin also has many alternative cryptocurrencies available for trading.
Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to send some funds. On Coinbase and Kraken, the easiest way to do that is to follow the instructions on how to transfer the money from your bank account. In most cases, it’ll just be a standard wire transfer, and you can probably get help at your bank if you’re unsure what to do.

Hi Mike, these reviews of the nicest places for buying bitcoin have helped me enormously. I’ve even understood the difference with depositing by credit card vs bank transfer (less fees with the latter on most exchanges).
The first step is to set up a wallet to store your bitcoin – you will need one, whatever your preferred method of purchase. This could be an online wallet (either part of an exchange platform, or via an independent provider), a desktop wallet, a mobile wallet or an offline one (such as a hardware device or a paper wallet).
The UI is appealing and rather easy to use as a beginner. Just make sure you understand those basic trading terms for placing buy/sell orders efficiently. Fees are currently set at 0.2 percent of your trade – a relatively competitive rate.
This collective, distributed computing network, called the “Ethereum Virtual Machine,” can be, in a sense, rented out. Participants who consume computing power pay for it with tokens, called Ether; those who contribute processing power can earn them. Of course, buyers and sellers can simply trade Ether independently of these activities.
A popular site for buying bitcoin or ether from those far-out tricky countries that are not accepted by the larger exchanges. Note that users cannot sell back to the site – only buy. There’s much more detail in my inspection of Coinmama which I encourage you to read.
The first thing to consider before asking where to get btc with a credit card, is that this service has only existed very recently. People find it quite incredible – why did no one offer card deposits before? Simply because credit card transactions were partially reversible by the bank. So these exchanges had to first gain lots of trust and goodwill before banks would allow them to operate over the SWIFT network. Using a card to buy btc means confirmation waiting time has been significantly reduced.
