Buying limits. For purchases via debit/credit card, the limit is only of USD 520 BTC per day. However for purchases through cash, the limit per day is USD 1,500 or USD 2,500 which is dependent on the area of residence.
Coinbase is one of America’s most popular Bitcoin exchange site and probably the fastest and easiest way to buy Bitcoin in the US. The site has an ‘Instant Buy’ option for credit or debit card purchases and setting up an account is quick and easy with no long waits for verification (this can be an issue with some exchange sites).
You’ll need to find a Bitcoin exchange that accepts your preferred payment method. Different payment methods also incur varying fees. Credit card purchases, for example, are often charged a fee of 3-10%, while most deposits with bank transfers are free. More information about fees can be found on each exchange’s website.
Like all major exchanges, Coinbase do require ID submission before you can finalize an order. Current verification times are reportedly slower than usual. Should you want to trade like a professional: use GDAX for larger volume transactions and cheaper fees.
Bitfinex’s high volume is key for traders as it ensures a low spread. More than 5.77 million bitcoins traded through it from April 2017 to October 2017 alone, which is double the volume of Kraken (3.6M BTC) and Coinbase (3.06M BTC). For newcomers, the complicated interface makes costly mistakes more probable while the lack of fiat funding options makes it impossible to use regular money to buy cryptocurrencies. However, experienced crypto traders will find everything they need at Bitfinex.
Look at the team’s composition for expertise and experience in the industry. Every real project will publish a short profile of each member, their history and individual role. A big team full of veterans is favorable.
Coinbase also lacks advanced options such as stop-loss orders or margin trading. If that’s what you’re looking for, take a look at (also U.S.-based) Kraken, which supports a larger number of cryptocurrencies and has more options.
The largest bitcoin exchange in the world at the moment in terms of US$ volume is Bitfinex, although it is mainly aimed at spot traders. Other high-volume exchanges are Coinbase, Bitstamp and Poloniex, but for small amounts, most reputable exchanges should work well. (Note: at time of writing, the surge of interest in bitcoin trading is placing strain on most retail buy and sell operations, so a degree of patience and caution is recommended.)
CEX is an integral part of my guide, because they offer a diverse range of services. This tutorial would feel empty without including them here. I also really appreciate the fact that customers can learn easily on CEX thanks to a fully beginner-optimized process. This UK based bitcoin exchange (ETH BTC) originally was a cloud mining operator. Due to increasing demand, it was decided to start offering bitcoins for sale. They now have over 700 000 users and accept Euro, US Dollar, and Russian Ruble. Wire transfer and SEPA payments are also accepted. CEX have a Level 2 PCI DSS data security clearance meaning that this site is extremely trustworthy with users data and money.
If it wasn’t for it’s non intuitive user interface and lack of convenient payment methods Bitstamp may have been rated #1 in our charts. But unfortunately today I can only recommend Bitstamp for larger purchases of coins where you will definitely need to use a wire transfer and the fees won’t compose such a large amount of the deposited sum.
Grayscale’s first reason for getting behind Zcash is that it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. The paper praises Zcash for “preserving what Bitcoin got right.” That includes various aspects of the economic model (limited supply, disinflationary), which seem to make Zcash a potential store of value, like gold, as well as the technology (decentralization, immutable record-keeping), which helped Bitcoin achieve its place at the top of the cryptokingdom with a price exceeding $10,000 at press time.
BitPanda is an Austria-based bitcoin broker that specialises in trading bitcoins within the Eurozone and offers a wide range of payment methods. Their exchange rate is higher than the average cryptocurrency exchange mainly due to the fact that they allow trades to buy bitcoins with Skrill, credit card, and other methods which allow chargeback. The broker boasts fast delivery and easy ID verification which makes trading small amounts of bitcoins particularly easy. Buying and selling larger volumes of the popular cryptocurrency, though, is a bit tougher due to the strict ID verification requirements. As for fees, the e-wallets come with higher charges while SEPA, SOFORT, GIROPAY, and EPS have very low fees.
Big fan of Bittrex but currently only taking corporate accounts, so you would already need an account. Other than that, worth looking at poloniex, kraken (but may not have enough coins for you) and coinexchange
If it’s lower fees you’re after, LocalBitcoins is another good option because the site simply puts buyers and sellers in contact with one other and offers an escrow service to ensure nobody gets ripped off. It is solely for bitcoin trading but a benefit it has is that it operates in all countries and buyers can pay for Bitcoins however they like, though most pay via cash deposit. Just remember to follow the rules of the site and beware of scammers.
While the above might be a lot to swallow for an absolute newcomer, there’s a lot more to learn about cryptocurrencies. And as we said before, each cryptocurrency is a little different; they’re constantly evolving, to say nothing of the new ones regularly popping up.
Finally, if you want low fees but still want to go the traditional exchange route, I’d recommend either Gemini, a New York-based site which offers some of the lowest fees around (but doesn’t operate in all states so check first to see if your state is catered for), or Kraken, which also charges low fees but can be a bit tricky for new users and the customer service isn’t all that great.
Below is a table that summarizes the best places to buy bitcoin. You’ll find sites ranked by: available payment methods, fees, ease-of-use, and reputation. The “reputation” column represents the overall user feedback received in forums. Some sites have multiple methods to deposit money, while others focus on one. The fee column represents commission levels on each exchange.

Bittrex has earned it’s place as the new contender to the throne of world’s largest crypto exchange. Years of hard work and some lucky circumstances (BTC-e shut-down, Poloniex exodus, Cryptsy) have compounded a steady inflow of new users. It is a great place to trade bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. I’ll let you read the detail in my Bittrex review, which has some important facts and analysis.
This collective, distributed computing network, called the “Ethereum Virtual Machine,” can be, in a sense, rented out. Participants who consume computing power pay for it with tokens, called Ether; those who contribute processing power can earn them. Of course, buyers and sellers can simply trade Ether independently of these activities.
The advent of Bitcoin and its stellar rise over the last few years has investors pouring their money into cryptocurrencies by the millions. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects achieved impressive returns, as well as dramatic declines.
Bitmex is the leading bitcoin margin trading site. Users can trade cryptocurrency derivatives with up to 100x leverage. Pairs include BTC/USD, Yen, Monero, Ripple, Dash, and Ethereum. Bitmex CEO Arthur Hayes has used his experience as an equity derivatives trader for Deutsche Bank to design, build, and maintain exactly the type of platform that users are looking for. Granted that this platform is for experienced and seasoned traders. Beginners should avoid trading coins here without knowing the implied volatility risks.
Entering all my information was just as straightforward as everything else. The problem was that I couldn’t exit this screen. Neither the “buy” nor “not now” option registered. I had to press the X and start all over.
I find HitBTC’s fees quite high, both deposit (1%) withdrawal (2%), then including the execution fee (0.1%) adds up to to be quite expensive. We will be reviewing shortly though, so do wait for the full review.
Yobit, a Russian-founded company first introduced on the BitcoinTalk forum in 2015. Widely criticised in online forums and not too much information to be found about them. Given the controversy surrounded we felt it only fair to look a little bit deeper at the exchange and see if they are being harshly judged. Read the review here, in short, not awful but recommend staying away!

Bitpanda is an Austrian Start-Up Company that was founded in October 2014. The company allows you to buy Bitcoins or Ethereum with a credit card as well as with Wire transfers, Neteller, Skrill, SEPA and more. The company supplies its services to European countries only with a relatively low fee.
Regardless of your intent, the same logic applies. Keep the crypto that you won’t need for a while in a secure wallet, a vault, or cold storage. And keep a separate wallet with a portion of your overall funds—perhaps a mobile one—for those daily transactions.
While Coinbase or Cryptopay are good places to start when buying bitcoins we strongly recommend you do not keep any bitcoins in their service; there is no excuse for controlling your own private keys.
