If it wasn’t for it’s non intuitive user interface and lack of convenient payment methods Bitstamp may have been rated #1 in our charts. But unfortunately today I can only recommend Bitstamp for larger purchases of coins where you will definitely need to use a wire transfer and the fees won’t compose such a large amount of the deposited sum.
This page aggregates the most reputable Bitcoin exchanges around today and compares them according to important buying factors. The list below is a general summary and more detailed reviews can be found at the bottom of the page.
Exchanges that accept credit cards or bank transfers are required by law to collect information about users’ identities. Buying bitcoins with cash is the most private way to buy bitcoins, whether it be through a P2P exchange like LocalBitcoins or at a Bitcoin ATM.
Grayscale describes Zcash’s attributes as “similar to precious metals, BTC [Bitcoin], and ETC [Ethereum Classic], making it an inflation hedge over long-term investment horizons.” (Fortune detailed this argument—the analogy between cryptocurrencies and gold—in depth for a January cover story.)
Grayscale’s first reason for getting behind Zcash is that it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. The paper praises Zcash for “preserving what Bitcoin got right.” That includes various aspects of the economic model (limited supply, disinflationary), which seem to make Zcash a potential store of value, like gold, as well as the technology (decentralization, immutable record-keeping), which helped Bitcoin achieve its place at the top of the cryptokingdom with a price exceeding $10,000 at press time.
Coinbase is one of America’s most popular Bitcoin exchange site and probably the fastest and easiest way to buy Bitcoin in the US. The site has an ‘Instant Buy’ option for credit or debit card purchases and setting up an account is quick and easy with no long waits for verification (this can be an issue with some exchange sites).
The customer service section of Coinmama was very clear, professional and quick during the times I communicated with them upon going through the process of registration or verification. To sum up the whole process, it was very straightforward and smooth than others like Bitcoin Exchange, Trading BTC USD, BTC EUR – CEX, since users are able to buy bitcoins immediately after registering.
The most bullish thing for any cryptocurrency is to be listed on an exchange. If a place like Coinbase, Bittrex or Kraken announces plans to list a coin that is still in its ICO phase, this is an excellent sign.
CEX is an integral part of my guide, because they offer a diverse range of services. This tutorial would feel empty without including them here. I also really appreciate the fact that customers can learn easily on CEX thanks to a fully beginner-optimized process. This UK based bitcoin exchange (ETH BTC) originally was a cloud mining operator. Due to increasing demand, it was decided to start offering bitcoins for sale. They now have over 700 000 users and accept Euro, US Dollar, and Russian Ruble. Wire transfer and SEPA payments are also accepted. CEX have a Level 2 PCI DSS data security clearance meaning that this site is extremely trustworthy with users data and money.
We really recommend storing any bitcoins you want to keep safe in a wallet you own. Many Bitcoin exchanges have been hacked and lost customer funds. If you don’t want to fall victim to these hacks then the easiest way is to store your coins in a wallet you control.
Your credit card information are not saved in Coinmama’s database. (One should note that the information may be saved or not by Simplex which is the payment service that utilized the processing of credit card transaction in Coinmama).
However, know that the value of digital currencies are subject to major fluctuations – far more pronounced than physical monies – and high-profile cryptocurrencies have been known to completely crash in the past.
The largest bitcoin exchange in the world at the moment in terms of US$ volume is Bitfinex, although it is mainly aimed at spot traders. Other high-volume exchanges are Coinbase, Bitstamp and Poloniex, but for small amounts, most reputable exchanges should work well. (Note: at time of writing, the surge of interest in bitcoin trading is placing strain on most retail buy and sell operations, so a degree of patience and caution is recommended.)
Judging by the bitcoin trading volume, HitBTC is one of the most popular bitcoin exchanges that offers a broad spectrum of altcoins. Although it is a well-established exchange, they do not provide information about the country they are based in. Nor did they provide sufficient details about the hacking incident that occurred early in 2016 and affected their clients’ accounts. HitBTC only offers banking services to major market makers and institutional investors; they are not registered as a payment provider. Nevertheless, the exchange provides trading of 150+ different coins while traders who provide liquidity by placing their own asks and bids are paid a highly competitive 0.01% rebate. I easily and safely managed to buy bitcoins using your guide. So far my experience understanding all the information here has been fascinating and simple. I’ve shared with several colleagues at work. Thanks from the deepest of my heart for this!
Poloniex was once the best cryptocurrency exchange, before competitors like Bittrex starting offering superior services. Nevertheless Poloniex went through extremely fast traffic growth since the demise of its rival Cryptsy in 2016, and especially since the recent altcoin bubble of early 2017. Traffic has grown from 33 million monthly visits in November 2017 to 66 million in December 2017. Poloniex has the nicest trading interface out there, both for mobile and desktop users this will work wonders. Please note that because Poloniex is a pure “crypto” exchange, it is not possible to deposit government (fiat) currency. You’ll need to first buy bitcoin elsewhere, and then deposit it to be able to tade. I’ve written a full analysis of Poloniex, further exploring the founders, users, security, fees, history, and alternatives.
Summary: 247Exchange is a veteran player in the Bitcoin ecosystem which allows you to buy Bitcoins with a credit card in a simple and secure manner. Unfortunately their buying process still has a few glitches and the verification process can take quite some time. I recently reviewed the service hands on, you can read about it here.
This is how traditional cash works; no one should know where past dollars were spent. “Since the absence of knowledge about the source or prior use of ZEC is generally accepted as a feature of the Zcash Network, the costs of accepting all ZEC are the same,” Beck writes. Bitcoin, on the other hand, forever records the provenance of its coins, thereby opening up the possibility for discrimination.
Each Bitcoin exchange charges different fees for its services. Most Bitcoin brokers, that sell bitcoins directly to buyers, charge a flat rate of 1% per transaction. Exchanges with orderbooks are geared towards high volume trading, and often have fees of 0.25-0.50% per trade. More information can be found on each exchange’s website.
Alternatively, you can send your crypto to a wallet that you control. There are many software wallets, and some, like the mobile wallet Coinomi, support a large number of cryptocurrencies. Good wallets for Ethereum are MyEtherWallet and Parity. For Bitcoin, some popular choices include Electrum and Xapo, which has the added benefit of issuing you a pre-paid card which can be used to spend BTC in stores and ATMs.
This is because most other cryptocurrencies are traded against Bitcoin. The liquidity for altcoins against the US dollar is often very poor. But on the other hand, the liquidity against BTC is usually very good. So it’s easy to get other currencies once you have bitcoins, but not easy to get other currencies without having BTC first.
I enjoyed the layout and raking of these top-rated bitcoin exchanges. However I would say that if you’re going to list & recommend Bitcoin.de as a site to buy with a bank transfer, then you should definitely list Kraken also. Both sites offer excellent fees and withdraw/deposit times. Ok it’s true that they don’t have the most beginner-optimized processes for purchasing. I think coinbase has a superior layout and is better adapted to beginner than Kraken which has far too many buttons, sub pages and trading features.
But first, a disclaimer: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and so many of the other cryptocurrencies out there can be a way to pay for stuff online, sure. And they can also be (if they aren’t already more popular as) investments. And investments, you might know, can go up and down. You can gain money on them, or lose it. And those values can fluctuate wildly, as you might’ve also seen lately.
And in 2015, Ethereum made debut, incorporating bitcoin’s basic blockchain premise and Litecoin’s pursuit of faster transaction speed, but adding a few of its own twists — including the ability to process little chunks of code, called “smart contracts” — and on its virtual peer-to-peer network as opposed to a dedicated server or mining rig.
I’m sure that coinbase is the best site for buying bitcoin with a card. But IMO the cex website allows speedier purchases and is easier to use as a beginner. just like coinbase, cex offers both bank transf deposits and visa/mastercard. the best part is that you can trade ethereum and cex credited all users with equivalent BitcoinCash balances after the hard fork. that’s my personal taste for good places to get btc there are not that many out there. ok there’s lots of “average” sites – but such place have huge fees and may not be as trustworthy as… Read more »
