The IRS policy document declares Bitcoin to be property, not currency, subject to capital gains tax – with that tax calculated against every change in buying power for a given amount of bitcoin, from the time it’s acquired to the time it’s spent. The decision is widely derided as unwieldy and overly complex, requiring users of the currency to record Bitcoin’s market price with every transaction, subject to an array of largely unfamiliar calculations. Others, however, remark that the net tax paid may often be less than if Bitcoin were treated as currency proper – but to a market that emerged in tax-free innocence, it is a difficult blow to soften.
The US-based exchange Cryptsy declared bankruptcy in January 2016, ostensibly because of a 2014 hacking incident; the court-appointed receiver later alleged that Cryptsy’s CEO had stolen $3.3 million.[217]
In order for a transaction to be confirmed, it must be packed in a block that utilizes strict cryptographic rules to be verified by the network. The mining process also prevents individual control of the block chain as well as the modification of any blocks.
Miners currently produce around 3,600 bitcoins per day, some portion of which they sell to cover electricity and other business expenses. The daily power cost of all mining is estimated around $500,000. Dividing that total by the current BTCUSD price provides an approximation of the minimum number of bitcoins which miners supply to markets daily.
Bitcoin also has an uncertain future. While the digital currency has become more and more popular, it remains unclear if it will hit critical mass and be widely accepted. As it stands now, most businesses do not accept bitcoins as payment. If the network were ever to be disbanded, the value of bitcoins could potentially be lost.
Another big day for bitcoin came in mid-August when a hard fork in the bitcoin block chain gave birth to the sister token bitcoin cash and saw bitcoin soar past £3,044.84 ($4,000) – a 40 per cent rise.
Mr Draghi expressed concerns that the decision for US exchanges such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) to trade bitcoin derivatives, which he believes could lead to European banks to get involved in the cryptocurrency market.
BitcoinTalk user laszlo (Laszlo Hanyecz) pays 10,000 BTC for two pizzas delivered to their house (valued at about $25), ordered and paid for by another user, jercos. This assigns the first concrete valuation to bitcoin – about $0.0025 per coin.
In May 2016, Gatecoin closed temporarily after a breach had caused a loss of about $2 million in cryptocurrency. It subsequently relaunched its exchange in August 2016 and is slowly reimbursing its customers.[218][219]
Bitcoin’s price is measured against fiat currency, such as American Dollars (BTCUSD), Chinese Yuan (BTCCNY) or Euro (BTCEUR). Bitcoin therefore appears superficially similar to any symbol traded on foreign exchange markets.
The IRS has said: “Taxpayers who do not properly report the income tax consequences of virtual currency transactions can be audited for those transactions and when appropriate can be liable for penalties and interest.”
The Reserve Bank of India, the country’s central bank, has issued three separate Bitcoin warnings since 2013. Last month the European Central Bank vice president said Bitcoin was a “speculative asset” where investors were “taking that risk of buying at such high prices”.
Several early adopters were wise or fortunate enough to earn, buy or mine vast quantities of Bitcoin before it held significant value. The most famous of these is Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakomoto. Satoshi is thought to hold one million bitcoins or roughly 4.75% of the total supply (of 21 million). If Satoshi were to dump these coins on the market, the ensuing supply glut would collapse the price. The same holds true for any major holder. However, any rational individual seeking to maximise their returns would distribute their sales over time, so as to minimize price impact.
In July 2016, researchers published a paper showing that by November 2013 bitcoin commerce was no longer driven by “sin” activities but instead by legitimate enterprises.[108] Uber switched to bitcoin in Argentina after the government blocked credit card companies from dealing with Uber.[109]
In September Bitfloor, a bitcoin exchange, also reported being hacked, with 24,000 bitcoins (worth about US$250,000) stolen. As a result, Bitfloor suspended operations.[202][203] The same month, Bitfloor resumed operations; its founder said that he reported the theft to FBI, and that he plans to repay the victims, though the time frame for repayment is unclear.[204]
On 19 June 2011, a security breach of the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange caused the nominal price of a bitcoin to fraudulently drop to one cent on the Mt. Gox exchange, after a hacker used credentials from a Mt. Gox auditor’s compromised computer illegally to transfer a large number of bitcoins to himself. They used the exchange’s software to sell them all nominally, creating a massive “ask” order at any price. Within minutes, the price reverted to its correct user-traded value.[186][187][188][189][190][191] Accounts with the equivalent of more than US$8,750,000 were affected.[188]

Gold and silver may potentially retain their value or increase in value over time. This is in contrast to paper currencies which have a tendency to lose value over time. The metals may potentially provide a hedge against a number of economic and geopolitical issues including inflation, declining currency values, erosion of purchasing power and more.
Unknown hackers were able to steal 18,866 bitcoins from Bitstamp’s operational hot wallet, worth roughly $5.2 million dollars. The attackers used social engineering against Bitstamp system administrator Luka Kodric to gain access to 2 of Bitstamp’s servers and subsequently the hot wallet’s private keys. The wallet was completely drained of all bitcoins shortly thereafter.
